Barbara J. Melton, age 77, of Fairfield, passed away Thursday, September 11, 2008 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant. Following her wishes, her body will be cremated.
Friends may pay their condolences to the family from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Barbara Jean Melton was born May 14, 1931 in Fairfield, IA to Samuel and Vernie (Maring) Kitchen. She was united in marriage with Floyd E. Melton in Lancaster, MO on April 28, 1951 and they later divorced. They were the parents of three children: Linda, Sherry and Butch.
Barbara was self-employed as a housekeeper in both Fairfield, and Columbia, MO, where she resided for 21 years before returning to Fairfield. In addition, she was bartender at 'The Den' in Fairfield for a number of years. Barbara attended the Nazarene Church and was a member of Walton Club. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, and collecting coins and dolls. In addition to her children and grandchildren, her devoted pet companion, Missy, held a special place in her heart.
Barbara is survived by her daughters and their families: Linda Rogers Orte of Washington, IA, and Sherry Briner, also of Washington. Barbara was blessed with four grandchildren: Julia Hall of Washington, IA, Robert Melton and wife Amy of Plattsburg, MO, Brandy Jo Melton stationed with the US Armed Forces in Vilseck, Germany, and Melissa Johns of Columbia, MO, as well as six great-grandchildren. Survivors include a brother and sister: Kathryn Duncan of Hillsboro, IA, and Carroll 'Jim' Kitchen of Plainsville, IL.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Floyd 'Butch' Melton, Jr., five brothers and four sisters: Samuel Kitchen, Paul Kitchen, Donald 'Podger' Kitchen, Gerald Kitchen, Billy Kitchen, Neva Steffensmeier, Geraldine Peebler, Nellie Kitchen and Florence Kitchen.
