Bettye K. Smith, age 89 of Fairfield, IA, passed away Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.

Following her wishes, her body will be cremated and a memorial service will be planned at a later date.

Bettye Kathryn Smith was born March 10, 1920 in Fairfield, IA, the daughter of Floyd and Gladys C. (Lewis) Gaines. She graduated from Fairfield High School. She married Theodore Burns Smith and they later divorced.

In addition to being a devoted mother, Mrs. Smith began her career as owner of Smitty's Cafe. She was later dining room manager of a Parsons College quad, manager of The Stever House, and she then retired after 20 years with Seifert's Clothing Store for. Her hobbies included a monthly breakfast fellowship with her high school classmates, singing, needlepoint, knitting, golf and bowling. Among her memberships, she was a member of the First Lutheran Church, past president of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, the Fairfield Women's Club, and a charter member of Walton Club. In addition to her family, she will be deeply missed by her lifelong friends.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her children and their families: Tom (Sue) Smith of Jackson, OH, Terry (Sheila) Smith of Clinton, IA, Susan (Steve Thorson) Barnes of Davenport, IA, Bettye (Ken) Connor of Douds, IA, and Tim (Becky) Smith of Chrystal Lake, IL. She was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
