Carol Elizabeth Nelson

Carol Elizabeth Nelson, age 84, of Fairfield, passed away Saturday April 6, 2013 at Sunny Brook Living Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday April 10, 2013 at New Sweden United Methodist Church with Pastors Melissa Bracht-Wagner and Diane Brokken officiating. Burial will be in New Sweden United Methodist Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday April 9, 2013 at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Carol was born December 29, 1928 to Joseph and Laura Fritz Buckingham in Fairfield, Ia. She married Willard Sylvester Nelson on February 5, 1949 in rural Jefferson County. He died July 20, 1989.

Carol was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. She was a homemaker and had worked for the senior site in Lockridge, IA. Carol was a member of the Rebecca lodge in Salina, She taught Sunday school, and had been treasurer for the New Sweden United Methodist Church for 30 plus years, and was Treasurer for the New Sweden Cemetery Association. Carol was a member of New Sweden United Methodist Church. She taught country school for 3 years at Beckwith, Harmony and Lockridge #5.

Carol is survived by her 6 children and families: Allen (Julie) Nelson of Fairfield, Ed (Sheryl) Nelson of Lockridge, Joe (Sandy) Nelson of Fairfield, Steve (Jean Ann) Nelson of Good Hope, Ill., Barbara (Randall) Smoot of Leonard, Mo., Rhonda Nelson (husband Craig Meyer) of Sedro Wooley, Wa. 14 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren, 3 Great-Great Grandchildren. 8 Siblings: Aletha Hay of West Burlington, Ruth Hoyt of Ottumwa, Helen Neff of West Lake Village, Ca.,(twin sister Della Taylor of Mount Pleasant)., Edith Gauby of Nanpa, Idaho, Bernice Ogden of Fairfield, Christine Boyenga of Merced, Ca., and Doris "Dee" Epperson of St. Francis, Ks.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 sister: Lois Shook and 2 brothers: Frank and Glen Buckingham.
