Charles George Hertel age 88 of Fairfield passed away June 30, 2013 at Jefferson County Health Center, Fairfield, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. July 8, 2013 at Behner Funeral Home with Father Nick Adam officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday July 7, 2013 at Behner Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.

Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association. Memorials and cards can be sent to 4397 E Jude Lane, Gilbert, AZ. 85298.

Charles G. Hertel was born May 28, 1925 to William F. and Erma Bishop Hertel in Ottumwa, Iowa. He married Shirley Ann Courtney on June 6, 1947 in Fairfield, Ia. Shirley passed away June 2, 2011.

Charles grew up and graduated from Fairfield High with the class of 1943. He served in the US Navy during WWII. Charlie lived most of his life in Fairfield, he owned and operated Hertel Auto repair. He was Fire Chief for the Fairfield Fire Department. Charles enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing, and baseball. He was a founder and coached Little League Baseball in Fairfield. . Over the years he played in several dance bands and the most recent the Mello - Tones. He was a member of VFW # 2271, and Lions club. In later years enjoyed the being a part of the Howard Johnson coffee club

Survivors include his two children: William R. (Chris) Hertel of Gilbert, AZ., Janice (Larry) Wilson of Gilbert, AZ; Four grandchildren: Jason Hertel, Wade Wilson, Kent Wilson, Kelly (Wilson) Runyon, and two great grandchildren, along with many other relatives and friends.

Charlie was preceded in death by: his parents, wife: Shirley and sister: Dorothy Denny.
