Charles R. (Bob) "Blackie" Merrill age 81, of Fairfield, passed away February 22, 2013 at his home under the care of HCI care services.
According to his wishes the body has been cremated.
A memorial service with Military Rites will be 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at Behner Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Cary officiating. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, in Ottumwa.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2013 prior to the memorial service at the Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, Ia.

Bob was born April 15, 1931 in Ottumwa to Charles A. and Martha H. Frye Merrill. He married Alice Hinerman on December 30, 1956 at the Willard Street Methodist Church in Ottumwa, Iowa. Bob was raised in Ottumwa and has been a resident of Fairfield for 55 years. He worked for Iowa Malleable Iron Co. for 31 years. Bob was a Korean Army Veteran serving in Korea and was a member of the American Legion.
Bob is survived by his wife of 56 years: Alice Merrill of Fairfield, two sons: Mark (Tammy) Merrill and Matthew Merrill both of Fairfield, five grandchildren: Jeremy Merrill of Kanas City, Mo., Austin Merrill of Iowa City, Brandon Merrill of Fairfield, Dustin Christner of Alton, Il., and Grant Merrill of Pleasant Plain, three great-grandchildren, three sisters: Ruth O'Brien, Vilene Given, and Ilene Coulter and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents: Charles and Martha Merrill, five brothers: Harold, Bill, Bernard, Gene and Ray, four sisters: Beulah Kilfoil, Lucille Merrill, Emily Dalbey and Bessie Smith.
