Cloyd C. Smith

Cloyd C. Smith, age 88, of Fairfield, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008 at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Following his wishes, his body will be cremated and a private family inurnment will be scheduled at a later date.

Cloyd C. Smith was born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1920 in Linby, IA to Leland and Blanche (Craig) Smith. He graduated from Packwood High School with the Class of 1937. He lived most of his life in Jefferson and Des Moines Counties, with 30 years previous residence in Burlington, IA where he was employed as a machinist by J.I. Case, Inc.

Cloyd was a United States Naval Veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. He married Mildred Bates on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1997 in Fairfield.

Cloyd is survived by his wife, Mildred of Fairfield, and her son, Randy (Colleen) Bates of Fairfield, and his children and their families: Christine Haifley of Omaha, NE, Shelly Kerr of Keosauqua, IA, and step-son David Weller, also of Keosauqua, IA. Cloyd was blessed with seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Lucille Cass Smith, and second wife, Anna Marie Smith, and his brother, Lowell Smith.
