Gladys I. Hollander, age 82 of Fairfield, passed away Monday, December 1, 2008 at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield, IA.

Family visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM, Thursday, December 4, 2008 at First Lutheran Church ELCA in Fairfield, with Pastor Marvin Robeck officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to the First Lutheran Church, or Hospice of Central Iowa.

Gladys Irene VanWinkle Hollander was born May 20, 1926 in Jefferson County to Orval R. and Elsie May (Alter) VanWinkle. She was united in marriage with Clair Virgil Hollander at Hope Lutheran Church in Germanville on September 4, 1947.

Gladys taught rural school for two years in Germanville. She was employed as a cook for 6 years at Parkview Care Center, and for 17 years at Jefferson County Hospital. Gladys volunteered at the Bargain Box, and the Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Fairfield and the Esther Club Women's Bible Group. Gladys enjoyed traveling with the First National Bank Travel Club.

Surviving Gladys are her children and their families: Ronald E. (Deb) Hollander of Burlington, IA, Penny S. (Joel) Boatright of Fairfield, IA, Bruce A. (Nikki) Hollander of Fairfield, IA, and Brian L. (Julie) Hollander, also of Fairfield. Gladys was blessed with 15 grandchildren: Michelle Grochowski, Eric Hollander, Joshua Hollander, Amy Johnson, Megan Roland, Jessica Hollander, Kelsey Hollander, Haylee Hollander, Seth Hollander, Savannah Hollander, Jackson Hollander, Olivia Hollander, Jordan Reid, Cole Boatright, and Claire Boatright; and five great-grandchildren.

Survivors include one brother, Leroy VanWinkle and his wife, DelReice.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Nancy Hollander, and sister Betty VanWinkle Herman.
