Funeral services were held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, January 5, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Fairfield. Rev. Jim Wotherspoon officiated. Burial followed in Lockridge Cemetery.

Ila Lois Heckenberg was born February 9, 1922 in Baring, MO, the daughter of Henry and Jesse (Couch) Atwater. She married Orval S. Heckenberg in Galesburg, IL on October 3, 1945. Orval passed away October 21, 2001. They were the parents of four children: Dick, Gene, Don and Renee.

Ila and Orval were residents of Fairfield for over 50 years. Ila was employed at Harper Brush Works, King's Super Value and as a police dispatcher at the Jefferson County Law Center. Ila was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fairfield, as well as the American Baptist Women Ministries and the Maxine Bates Circle.

Ila is survived by her children and their families: Dick and wife Andrea of Vienna, Austria, Gene and wife Judith of Algonquin, IL, Don and wife Amy of Burlington and daughter Renee of Richland, IA. Ila was grandmother to eleven grandchildren and great-grandmother to three.

Survivors include two brothers and one sister: William Atwater of Memphis, MO, Hubert Atwater of Cheyenne, WY and Wilma Anderson of San Diego, CA.

Predeceasing Ila are her parents, her husband Orval and one sister, Twila.
