Lewis A. Pequignot

Lewis A. Pequignot, age 90, formerly of East Pleasant Plain, IA, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2009 at The Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown, IA, where he lived for the past two and a half years.

He was the only son of Louis A. and Merta C. (Thomson) Pequignot, born near Fairfield, IA in Jefferson County on July 2, 1919. Lewis was educated at country school, and Fairfield High School. He was married to Orphabelle Liggett on November 30, 1939. Orphabelle preceded him in death on August 19, 2003.

Lewis worked at the Malleable Iron in Fairfield, and the Ordinance Plant at New London making munitions for the war effort, prior to entering the Army. He served in the 209th Field Artillery, 15th Army, and saw action in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany.

After returning from WWII, the couple farmed near Fairfield, Haysville, and Fremont. Lewis also did custom corn shelling and grain hauling, and road construction hauling. They retired on an acreage in East Pleasant Plain, living there 18 years before moving to Fairfield in 2003.

His whole life Lewis loved horses and ponies. He liked to work hard, have a good time, go dancing, and have a fast car.

Lewis is survived and will be greatly missed by his daughter, Sonda Jane Petermann, son-in-law Larry Petermann of Grinnell; granddaughter Chandra Elizabeth Petermann, husband Michael Dake, of Des Moines, and great-grandson Garrison Lewis Petermann-Dake: his sister Shirley (Emil) Heston, Jr. of Fairfield, and sister Donna of Florida, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service, with military rites, will be held at Behner Funeral Home at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, October 24, 2009, with Rev. Danny Cary officiating. The family will be present one hour prior to the service. There will also be a gathering at the V.F.W. following the memorial service.
