Lorraine Frances Samons

Lorraine Frances Samons was born August 5, 1927 in Fairfield, Iowa. She passed away August 16, 2014 at Klein Center, Burlington, IA. She was the last remaining child of Nobel E. and Myrtle (Gilliland) Samons; the parents of six children.

Lorraine was educated in the Jefferson County rural schools, Batavia and Fairfield High Schools. She earned her B.A. degree from Parsons College in Fairfield, IA and her Master’s degree from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO. She was a long time teacher in the Walnut and Round Prairie township rural schools, Batavia Elementary School, the Department of Defense schools in Germany and Okinawa, and the Burlington Community Schools from which she retired in June 1989.

She strongly believed in and supported the educational organization to which she belonged, and like most teachers, continued to remain current in all aspects of education. Her greatest interests were involvement in her family, her profession, in travel and people in general. Lorraine was a member of Retired School Personnel, Alpha – Delta, Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority and Burlington Woman’s Club.

Lorraine is survived by cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, George & Richard Samons; 3 sisters, Ruth and Irma Samons and Lois Parrish.

A Graveside Memorial service will be held Monday, 11:00 am, August 25, 2014, at Leando Cemetery, Douds, IA with words of comfort by Pete Gardner officiating.
