Merle Andrew "Skip" Nelson was born March 22, 1924 in Abingdon, Iowa. He was the son of Joseph Ray and Clara (Smith) Nelson.

Skip graduated from Packwood High School with the Class of 1941. He married Iva Arlene Mercer on April 9, 1944 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Skip lived most of his life in Jefferson County, with a few years spent in Colorado. He farmed and spent 25 years as a self-employed general contractor. Skip was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene of Fairfield; two sons, Robert Nelson and wife Barbara of Kansas City, MO and Tim and wife Sherri Nelson of Libertyville, IA; and one daughter, Pam Wolfe, and husband Ron of Bowdle, SD. Skip was grandfather to Kristin, Nicole, and Michelle Nelson, Mellisa, Randy, Karen, Jess and Jerry Wolfe. Skip had seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Chet Nelson, of Hedrick, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sons, two brothers, Wallace and Morris Nelson and one sister, Martha Nelson.
