Roy Lee Nelson went to be with Jesus on July 9th, 2014.
Roy was born to Robert "Bob" and Shirley (Black) Nelson on July 10th, 1963 in Fairfield, Ia. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1981. Roy spent the next few years traveling the south, working different jobs, and ultimately discovering that there was no place like home. Moving back to Iowa he went to work at Loudens in Fairfield where his father had worked until retirement. While traveling had been a dream in his teen years, raising a family was something he would only do close to home. Family was always the most important thing to Roy. He was a self-proclaimed mama's boy, thought his father hung the moon, and prayed one day his daughters would be as smart and beautiful as his little sister.
Roy moved to Chariton IA in 1992 after marrying Rhonda (Hill) Nelson on July 2nd of that year. He brought with him his two little girls (both smart and beautiful as ordered) and joined Rhonda and her two boys for what would be a busy and loving 22 years. Adding two more little girls (you guessed it, smart and beautiful) made things even busier but brought that much more love. Roy worked for Johnson Machine Works for the last 14 years, and had many close friends there. He was very active in his church, at one time starting a Tae Kwan Do class called Jump Kicks for Jesus, where the kids learned bible verses AND got to break boards. It was a huge success! God, family and friends were always top priority to Roy and while he is now closer to one he will be terribly missed by the others.
Roy is survived by his wife, Rhonda; children Josh (Jessica) Perkins, Betty Rose Lee Nelson, Tyler Perkins, Mandy (Pete) Dunphy, Kaye Lee Nelson and Emma Lee Nelson; grandson Samuel Dunphy; his father and his little sister Betty (Jeremy) Howard. He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents Roy and Betty Black, and Art and Elizabeth Nelson.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am Monday July 14th at Cornerstone Community Church in Chariton IA. A private burial of cremains will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Community Church and cards may be sent to the family home at 825 N 8th Street Chariton, IA 50049.
