Thelma Catherine McNew

September 18, 1913 — June 4, 2007

Thelma Catherine Ekwall was born on September 18, 1913 in Wadesville, IA, just east of Fairfield. Her father, John died at an early age and her mother, Augusta, went about the task of raising an only child. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1931.

Thelma married Carl Raymond McNew on February 11, 1937. To this marriage, one son was born on February 19, 1939. Ray passed away January 20, 1989. Thelma did not retire until the age of 70, with bookkeeper experiences at Eclipse Lumber, Fairfield Laundry and Dry Cleaners, and the Fairfield Daily Ledger.

She continued to live at home until health moved her to SouthGate Apartments, SunnyBrooke, and Jefferson County Hospital Extended Care. Thelma was a life-time member of the United Methodist Church. She loved being with family and friends. Her interests included cards, reading, crossword puzzles, watching sports, knitting and crocheting. Thelma was active in the Hospital Auxiliary, Bargain Box and the Elks Auxiliary.

Thelma was preceded in death by her husband Ray, and her parents, John and Augusta Eckwall.

She is survived by Bob (Ann) McNew of Danville, KY, grandchildren Curt of Dayton, OH, Doug of Ames, IA, Sheri of Lexington, KY, and great-grandsons Daniel, Rob, and Charles of Dayton, OH.

Funeral services followed the visitation at 10:00 AM on Saturday, with Rev. Mike Metz officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.
