Veblen Makrides (65) passed away during the night of June 22, 2023, surrounded by love and music. Veblen was born in Buffalo, NY, grew up in Newton, MA and as a young adult after living briefly in Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara, CA, moved to Fairfield, Iowa, where she was a long-time resident.
She showed an early talent for writing, music, and visual arts, passions that she continued to explore in different ways throughout her life. She loved long walks, good talks, playing cards (fiercely), stray cats, and turtles. Her favorite color was purple, and she loved flowers, especially violets. She loved to prepare healthy organic meals and exchange menu ideas. She was generous and kind to family and friends, always remembering birthdays and holidays.
Strong-willed, Veblen faced many health challenges courageously and with humor. It was not easy for her, but until her last illness, she always reemerged. She is deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her family, and her dear companions, Pam and Bethany.
She is survived by her sisters and their spouses, Victoria (Klaus) and Elizabeth (Ben), her stepmother Maryjane, nephews and niece (Paul, Gelando, Jack, Charlie and Vivian), her cousins (Pola-Elisa, Gavin, and others) and other close family members (Galen and Susan). She was preceded in death by her parents, Al and Elisa, her uncle Joseph, and her aunt Sylva.
Following her wishes, she will be cremated and laid to rest on Friday, June 30th at 10am next to her mother in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, IA
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the arbordayfoundation.org.
