Walter Schanfeldt

Walter Schanfeldt age 96 of Parkview Care Center passed away August 23, 2013 at Jefferson County Health Center, Fairfield, IA.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield with Pastor Ed Parker officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery with Military rites.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2013 from 10:00 to 11:00 prior to the service.

Memorials can be made to: Fairfield Public Library. Cards and Memorials can be left at the funeral home.

Walter was born March 4, 1917 to Walter and Mary (Marks) Schanfeldt Sr. in Spearville, KS. He married Olive Louise Harris May 31, 1941. She passed away March 30, 1980. He then married Elizabeth Christy in April of 1981.

Walter graduated from Cimmaron High School Cimmaron, Ks. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1940. He joined the Navy in September ,1941. He served in the North Atlantic on a destroyer. During 1943 he was assigned to the Pacific Theater and was a part of Navy battles leading to Japan.

Walter had always enjoyed good health. His hobbies included being an avid reader, working crossword puzzles, and watching ball games.

Walter is survived by wife Elizabeth Schanfeldt at (Parkview Care Center) in Fairfield,Ia., son Mark (Judy) Schanfeldt of Freeport, Il. two stepdaughters: Ramona Peterson of Vero Beach, Fl. , and Tami Crafton of Ottumwa, Ia., 2 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

Walter was preceded in death by: his parents, and two sisters: Bertha Lee Stremel, and Louise Collins.
